The Law Is Not of Faith: Essays on Works and Grace in the Mosaic Covenant

Is the Mosaic covenant in some sense a republication of the covenant of works? What is the nature of its demand for obedience, since sinful man is unable to obey as God requires? How in turn was the law to drive Israel to Jesus? This book explores these issues pertaining to the doctrine of republication once a staple in Reformed theology a doctrine with far-reaching implications for Paul s theology, our relationship to Old Testament law, justification, and more.

Above the Law

From Publishers Weekly

Last seen in bestseller Green’s The Letter of the Law (2000), feisty Dallas lawyer Casey Jordan must contend with illegal immigrants, abuse of power and pure unadulterated evil in this rousing legal thriller. When a U. S. senator from Texas known only as Chase, the kind of guy who frequents coke whores and kills puppies, suspects one of his undocumented workers, Elijandro Ellie Torres, of messing with his wife, Chase shoots Ellie and fakes the death as a hunting accident. Casey, who practices law out of an abandoned gas station, takes on the case of Ellie’s widow, Isadora, and baby, Paquita, who are taken into custody by immigration officials and then deported. Casey’s hunky love interest, PI Jose O’Brien, aids her in the ever-broadening investigation. Most of the characters are pretty much off-the-shelf, but Green throws in enough unexpected twists to distract readers from the plot’s overly familiar aspects. Fans of Green’s 12 previous novels will

In the Shadow of the Law: A Novel

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This outstanding debut goes behind the scenes at Morgan Siler, one of Washington, D. C. ’s most powerful K Street law firms, as several lawyers become embroiled in two difficult cases: a pro bono death penalty case in Virginia and a class action suit brought against a Texas chemical corporation after an explosion kills dozens of workers. Assigned to the pro bono case is the earnest, rumpled first-year associate Mark Clayton, who wonders, as he struggles with sleep deprivation and trying to reach his billable-hours target, if he hasn’t made a terrible career choice. Also on the case is the brilliant, cocksure young lawyer Walker Eliot. Leading the Hubble Chemical defense is the ferocious litigator Harold Fineman, and lording over them all is Peter Morgan, the supremely confident, never-satisfied managing partner of the firm. Though the novel features plenty of satisfying twists and turns, the book transcends the legal thriller genre.

Review

“Students need to hit the ground running – this chapter (Chapter 3) has a positive blend of material that does just that! The coverage is well-balanced! This chapter serves as a “kick-off” to the remaining components of the system. “”This text is a true leader in the industry! It is updated, current, well organized and thought through!”"…clearly promotes ‘critical understanding’ with the Close-Ups, New Directions, Doing Your Part, A Question of Ethics, What Americans Think, and landmark Comparative Perspectives!”"In terms of organization, the text is well thought through! The chapter selection is state-of-the-art from start to finish!”"The material is clear, accurate, interesting, on the appropriate level and most important, ‘on the cutting edge’ of the text’s three major themes: 1. Criminal justice involves public policies 2. The concept of social system is an essential tool and 3. American values provide the foundation on which criminal justice is based. ”

William Law: A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, The Spirit of Love (Classics of Western Spirituality)

Often called the greatest of the post-Reformation English mystics, William Law was born in King’s Cliffe, England, became a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church. After losing his position at Cambridge for refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance to George I, he became the center of a small spiritual community. He was a religious guide to the Gibbon family and included among his disciples John and Charles Wesley. His practical work as a spiritual director-as expressed in this, his best-known piece, A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life-deeply influenced the English Evangelical Revival. The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church says this of the book: “The simplicity of its teaching and its vigorous style soon established the work as a classic, which has probably had more influence than any other post-Reformation spiritual book except the Pilgrim’s Progress. ” In his later years Law became an intense admirer of the
