What are the benefits of obtaining a Master’s of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science?
Miami University offers a 3 year plus 2 year clinical in Clinical Laboratory Science program that culminates in a Masters of Science. What would one gain by obtaining the Master’s degree, as opposed to Bachelor’s degree?
A recent report issued by the United States Department of Labor indicates an increasing demand for professionals in all area of health care, including clinical laboratory science. Graduates of the program have an opportunity for careers in clinical practice, laboratory supervision and management, health regulatory agencies, sales and technical representation for scientific equipment companies, research, and education.
Clinical Laboratory Science graduate programs teach students to perform the vital task of analyzing tests on various body fluids in order to facilitate the accurate diagnosis of illness or disease by doctors. Holders of a masters (MS) or PhD degree in clinical laboratory science can become hematologists, oncologists, medical researchers and more.
Job prospects for graduates of clinical laboratory sciences programs are excellent. Our placement rate is typically 100 percent. Hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the United States are facing a critical shortage of qualified clinical laboratory personnel. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2002 and 2010, U.S. laboratories will need approximately 13,200 new workers/year to properly staff clinical laboratory facilities. Since accredited clinical laboratory programs are graduating fewer than 5,000 each year, job security and increased wages are predicted for graduates of CLS programs.
Specialists in blood bank technology perform and supervise both routine and specialized tests in blood centers and hospital-based transfusion services. Their duties include:
* Testing for blood group antigens
* Investigating abnormalities
* Supporting physicians in transfusion therapy
* Blood collection and processing
* Supervising and/or teaching
* Research
Students successfully completing this program will be prepared to assume positions in supervision/management, clinical research or teaching in a hospital, blood center, university, government or health care-related industry.
