What year was Horus, the Egyptian God, born?
I have been trying to investigate claims that Horus, the Egyptian God, was born on December 25th and have found no evidence or no record of what date he was born. Does any Egyptologist have any evidence of the time of year he was born in?
I’ll have to agree with you guys on the December 25th thing. Plus the date December 25th wasn’t mentioned in the gospels. It was the church who later decided to make his birthday December 25th. So that is a point against Zeitgeist.
Horus is an ancient God, son of Isis and her brother Osiris. He is a Sky God and also a Sun God.
His cult is closely connected with Pharaoh and from the end of the Ancient Kingdom onwards one of the 5 names of the King is : Hor Nub – Golden Horus – which refers clearly to the color of the sun.
As December 25th is the Winter Solstice we may assume that his birth-date could have been celebrated on this day. There is no watertight evidence for that till now but it is safe to say that there Must Have been a strong connection to the two. Further we see that other Savior-Gods like the Persian Mithras had their birthday on December 25th.
The fact that the Christian Church adopted it as the birth day of Jesus is no wonder. The first Church leaders tried to keep the ancient feast days as much as possible, to make it easier for the people to convert to the new religion. See also Easter.
