Does ‘believing strongly in democracy’ have the same ideas as the freedoms of the constitution?
We are in a debate….can I believe in an Ideal democracy, and still support freedom of religion? Like the Catholic standpoint on birth control, and Jehovah Witness and blood transfusion. I am glad for both groups of people and that we live in a country to choose our religion and values, but on the same token I am also glad our Democracy usually takes a majority rules approach, and respects everyone regardless, which protects our right to choose, and also protects rights of minor children, who may not be old enough to choose for theirselves. Just wanted some other thoughts on the subject!
According to different polls 86% claim to be Christians and believe in God. The other can believe what they want to. That’s a Democracy. A majority does not force minoritys to choose but if 83% believe in God then they must believe that this Country was founded on those Christian principles. The founders made sure that one did not have authority over the other and all had the right to choose how they or what they believe in. This is why we are allowed to vote because then the majority does rule and as long as the people have these standpoints you menntioned it will remain that way. If the 14% don’t like it I’m sure they can find a Country who isn’t established under these religious principles who will care less in what they want to do in their lives.
