What are the basic fundamental structures behind mathematics?
What makes math *math* for what it is these days? Common denominators? A root source? Origin theories?
We can all point to how our solar system was created, why not mathematics?
Interesting question.
Math is simply a game, that is, a set of rules that we all agree to follow for the sake of playing the game. In this way it is similar to a language. Why do we call a tree “tree” or the sky “sky”? We just do. And because we all agree, we can communicate. In many ways, math is similar.
We deal in Base 10 because we just happen to have 10 fingers. We use Euclidean geometry because Euclid did the most exhaustive and therefore most popular work in the field of geometry long ago.
Some aspects of math aren’t simply rules, but inherent truth and idisputable facts. Prime numbers are one example. In the movie “Contact” the aliens display that they are intelligent life by brodcasting prime numbers through space.
I would argue that the rules-of-the-game aspects weren’t created or discovered but invented by humans (just as languages are invented, not discovered) and that the inherent truths of mathematics were put into place by a higher intelligence that many people call God.
