Rebuttal of Multicultural Education Criticisms?
It’s finals and my brain is fried. Please help.
I need to be able to “talk back” (rebuttal) these two statements about Multicultural Education.
Critics worry that the emphasis on race and culture will be harmful to our national unity.
Some critics note that many teachers focus on surface culture, such as food, dress, literature, language, etc. They think students aren’t encouraged to get into unspoken and unconsciousness rules of deep culture.
I have an idea but, I’m just unsure. Help, please.
I’m sorry but you’re asking me how to rebut things I think are true.
My problem with multicultural education (aside from its utter irrelevance to future employers) is that it takes up valuable class time which would be better devoted to reading, writing, science and mathematics. We’re already trailing most of the industrialized world in math and science. Obviously we’re not spending enough time teaching those things. And if we’re teaching other cultures, what do we leave in, and what gets left out? Do we talk about genital mutilation, or leaving girl babies to die because the government allows you only one child?
The emphasis on race and culture DOES divide us to some extent.
It sort of scares me that the statements you have to rebut aren’t more objective.
