Overview Of The History Of Heart Disease
The history of heart disease contains some quite interesting facts. The world’s understanding of the importance of the heart and heart disease in relation to our health, has changed dramatically over the thousands of years since ancient times.
Far back to ancient Egypt, the heart was known as a major organ. Heart disease is much more common now than in the past, as the research on the history of heart disease shows.
Historical facts show the Egyptians were well aware of the heart being very important in relation to one’s health. Ancient Egyptian’s thought the heart had a supernatural significance in one’s life. The Far East and ancient Egyptian’s have some similar thoughts as regards the heart.
Ancient Egypt’s Beliefs About The Heart
These ancient Egyptian archaeological discoveries tell us that they believed the seat of personality and of human wisdom originates in the heart. A common thought was that the heart had several channels or passageways leading from the heart… to areas within the body. The flow of fluids such as blood, saliva, nutrients, and air, to parts of the body where needed, were transmitted by these pathways. It was commonly believed that if a channel became blocked disease would then occur.
Personality, soul, and the emotions it was thought… it was believed the heart was the hub for them. All through history to this present day, the heart is talked about as if feelings and emotions come from it. The ancient Egyptians had the idea God talked to us by means of our heart. Over and over we have heard it over the years, “She has a broken heart”. The ancient Egyptians had a good understanding of health and medical matters.
History Of Heart Disease And The Middle Ages
Research on the history of heart disease of the English speaking people in the middle ages, indicate they did not have much disease caused by cholesterol. The Briton’s did not experience very many cases of heart disease in the middle ages. They did not process foods, and ate foods in their natural state. These foods that they consumed were also high in nutritional value.
The Modern Age And Cardiovascular Disease
In pre-industrial times, medical research on the history of heart disease, tells us that most people did not suffer from heart ailments and subsequent death from cardiovascular disease.
Many lifestyle changes started with the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Cardiovascular disease also became more prevalent in the 19th century. The not so positive thing about modern technology is that there is less need for manual labour. Manual labour had health benefits for the heart and body. So quite simply doing physical work is good for heart disease prevention, and will also help you keep from getting fat.
The Modern Age And Diet
As we all know nowadays, the foods we eat play a huge role in the possibility of whether or not we will have any cardiovascular ailments. Foods high in trans fatty acids, saturated fats, as well as salt, and other types of food are very destructive to the heart. Fries, burgers, and such are commonly known to be unhealthy, depending on how they are prepared, and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Health issues are also created by some of the additives to canned foods such as salt. Processed foods may not be as readily absorbed as unprocessed foods. Exercise and eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables will serve you well, perchance then… we may not become a statistic in the books of the future of the history of heart disease.
